App-aware links vs short links

A short link gives a destination a compact, shareable URL. An app-aware link also recognizes certain destinations and can offer a visitor an app-opening option alongside a web fallback. In Qiklinks, app routing is experimental: a click or opening attempt does not prove that an app launched.

What changes when a link is app-aware?

A short URL is the address you share. App awareness describes what can happen when someone follows it. These are different parts of the same journey: a readable link can also lead to a destination-aware opening page.

Qiklinks recognizes destinations such as Amazon, YouTube, Spotify, and several social and messaging platforms. For supported destination URLs, the opening page offers an explicit attempt to open the app and a way to continue on the web. Generic websites use web routing.

Short URLs and app-aware routing solve different tasks
Question Short URL App-aware routing
What does it describe? The shareable address. The opening journey for a recognized destination.
Does it guarantee an app launch? No. No. Device, browser, and installed-app behavior still matter.
Can it work with campaigns? Yes, when the service supports campaign organization. Yes. Qiklinks groups these links within campaigns.

Why does a web fallback matter?

A visitor may not have the destination app installed. They may also be using a desktop browser or an embedded browser inside another app. A web fallback gives that visitor another route to the destination instead of relying on an app-opening attempt alone.

Test both paths. Confirm that the destination is the correct product, video, profile, or playlist and that any required affiliate identifiers remain present. An app installed on your own phone does not establish how the link behaves for everyone else.

How do you create an app-aware link in Qiklinks?

  1. Sign in with Google and choose your workspace.
  2. Create or open a campaign for the launch or content you are sharing.
  3. Paste the full public destination URL and review its recognized provider and routing note.
  4. Choose an optional alias or expiry, and decide whether to apply the campaign’s UTM tags.
  5. Create the link, then test its opening options before sharing it.

Recognition is not a compatibility certification. Review the recognized destinations and routing limitations for storefronts and shortened URLs.

What should you test before a campaign goes live?

Try an iPhone and an Android device when those platforms matter to your audience. Check a regular mobile browser and the in-app browser from the channel where you plan to share. Where possible, test with and without the destination app installed.

Amazon short URLs and other recognized shorteners are preserved rather than expanded; app handoff through them is unverified. Shopify storefronts use web routing, while Shop app destinations are handled separately. Test the exact final URL you will distribute.

Does an app-opening attempt count as a conversion?

No. An app-opening attempt records an attempt, not a verified launch, installation, purchase, or affiliate conversion. Qiklinks provides traffic reporting, not purchase or revenue attribution.

Use campaign analytics to review recorded visits and opening events. If you need sales reporting, review the separate tools and reports supplied by your destination or affiliate program rather than treating a click as a sale.
