UTM tags for campaign links
UTM parameters are labels added to a destination URL to describe a campaign’s source, medium, and name. Qiklinks campaigns support utm_source, utm_medium, and utm_campaign defaults. Applying them to a link adds missing keys while preserving existing tags and affiliate identifiers.
Which UTM parameters does Qiklinks support?
Qiklinks has campaign defaults for three fields. Choose values that your team can recognize and repeat across a launch. A short written naming convention is more useful than inventing a new label every time you create a link.
| Parameter | Purpose | Example |
|---|---|---|
utm_source
|
Identify the source or publisher. | newsletter |
utm_medium
|
Describe the channel. | email |
utm_campaign
|
Name the promotion or launch. | summer_launch |
These are illustrative values, not required keywords. Use the conventions expected by the analytics tools on your destination website.
What does a tagged destination URL look like?
This example uses a reserved example domain and contains no live campaign data:
https://example.com/collection?utm_source=newsletter&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=summer_launch
The query string starts with a question mark. Additional parameters use an ampersand. If the destination already has a query string, add new keys without creating a second question mark or losing the existing values.
Avoid putting personal information, passwords, email addresses, or customer identifiers in campaign labels. URLs can be copied, shared, logged, and exposed in browser history.
How do you apply campaign UTM defaults in Qiklinks?
- Create or edit the campaign and set its source, medium, and campaign values.
- Create a link inside that campaign and paste the original destination.
- Open “Make it yours” and select “Apply this campaign’s UTM tags” when you want the defaults added.
- Create the link and inspect the resulting destination before distributing it.
Existing UTM keys are not overwritten by the
campaign defaults. A destination containing
utm_source=partner keeps that
source even when the campaign default is
newsletter. Check the URL you
actually save, rather than assuming the defaults
replaced everything.
What happens to affiliate identifiers and signed URLs?
Qiklinks preserves existing query bytes and affiliate identifiers when applying tags. It also avoids adding campaign tags to recognized signed URLs, where a query change could invalidate the signature. Avoid manually stripping parameters from a partner or signed destination.
Preserving an identifier does not establish affiliate attribution. A merchant or affiliate network determines whether a referral qualifies and how sales are credited. Test with that program’s tools where available.
Do UTM tags and Qiklinks analytics measure the same thing?
No. UTM tags label the destination URL for analytics systems that understand those parameters. Qiklinks analytics reports traffic and opening events at the shared-link layer. Those systems can have different event definitions, bot filtering, time zones, and visibility.
Qiklinks does not currently provide purchase or revenue attribution. Use consistent labels to organize campaign work, then interpret each report using its own measurement definitions. See the product measurement summary before presenting click totals as business outcomes.
