UTM Tracking: A Practical Campaign URL Guide

Learn how to use utm_source, utm_medium, and utm_campaign consistently. Build campaign URLs and understand attribution without overcomplicating your links.

UTM parameters are named query parameters added to a URL. A compatible analytics tool on the destination can read them and attribute a visit to a campaign. The page still loads normally, but the visit carries more context.

The three parameters to know

A simple example

Suppose you share a product in an email. Start with your product URL, set source to newsletter, medium to email, and campaign to autumn-launch. Create another link for Instagram using the same campaign name but a different source and medium.

https://example.com/product?utm_source=newsletter&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=autumn-launch

Set a convention before launch

Choose lowercase names and one consistent separator, such as hyphens. Keep a short list of agreed source and medium values. “Instagram,” “instagram,” and “ig” can fragment your reporting if your analytics treats them as different values.

Preserve the destination’s existing parameters

Some URLs already include product options, search filters, or affiliate identifiers. Do not delete these when adding tags. Qiklinks preserves existing query parameters and replaces only the UTM fields for which you enter a new value. Always test the resulting destination.

What UTM tags do not do

They do not shorten a URL, open an app, or independently count clicks. They also do not guarantee perfect attribution: redirects, privacy settings, app transitions, and analytics configuration can affect reporting. Avoid using UTM tags on internal navigation because they can interfere with your understanding of the original acquisition source.

Keep personal information out of URLs

URLs can appear in browser history, logs, and analytics. Use campaign names, not email addresses, phone numbers, or other personal information. Campaign tags should describe the marketing activity rather than identify a person.

Build and verify

  1. Create your campaign URL using the Qiklinks UTM builder.
  2. Open it and confirm the correct page loads.
  3. Check that your analytics recognizes the campaign parameters.
  4. Share the tested URL in the intended channel.
  5. Review visits and conversion outcomes in your analytics tool.
