What Is a Deep Link? App Linking Explained

Learn the differences between deep links, universal links, Android App Links, and deferred deep linking, with practical testing steps.

Qiklinks editorial · Updated October 11, 2026

A deep link takes a person to a specific piece of content rather than a general starting screen. On the web, it might point to a particular product page. In a mobile app, it might open the same product inside the installed app.

Why marketers care about the destination

When someone clicks a product recommendation, they expect that product. Sending them to a homepage adds an extra search step. A specific destination can reduce that friction, but it does not guarantee a conversion. The page, offer, device, and user intent still matter.

Three common ways to reach an app

Custom URL schemes

A custom scheme uses an app-specific prefix instead of HTTPS. These links require an app that recognizes the scheme. They may fail when the app is absent, and browser behavior varies. Do not use a scheme as your only destination without testing a fallback.

Universal links on iOS

Universal links are HTTPS links associated with an app through a verified relationship between the website and the app. With the correct configuration, a supported link can open the app. Without the app, the HTTPS URL can still load a website. The app owner controls this configuration.

Android App Links

Android App Links also use a verified relationship between a web domain and an app. Supported links can route to the installed app. Verification, user preferences, and the context of the click affect the result.

What is deferred deep linking?

Deferred deep linking attempts to retain a destination across an app installation. Someone clicks a link, installs the app, and then reaches the intended content. This requires additional infrastructure and app cooperation; it is not something a plain URL can guarantee.

Test the journey your audience will take

  1. Test the exact destination on iOS and Android.
  2. Repeat with the app installed and absent.
  3. Open the link from social and email in-app browsers.
  4. Confirm the web fallback remains useful.
  5. Record the behavior before increasing campaign spend.

How Qiklinks fits today

Qiklinks creates standard HTTPS campaign links and static QR codes. Native app opening depends on the destination’s own support. Managed routing and deferred deep linking are not included in this version.
